Suicide Awareness Week – September 10-16, 2017
This week, September 10-16, is National Suicide Awareness Week. Among the most common reasons why people take their own life is an ongoing struggle with a mental health issue.1 Whether it be mental illness, trauma, or an experience such as bullying in school, it is the continuous emotional pain and suffering that can become overwhelming. When pain exceeds someone’s abilities to cope, it results in hopelessness; which can lead to thoughts of suicide.
70% of people tell someone, or give warning signs, before taking their own life.2 Below are some warning signs of suicide3:
- Increasing use of alcohol or drugs
- Showing anxiety, agitation, unable to sleep or sleeping all of the time
- Withdrawing from friends, family and society
- Displaying rage, uncontrolled anger, seeking revenge
- Acting recklessly, seemingly without thinking
